The missing half of “wintel” is, according to this article,
“Win.” While several Linux distributions are making Itanium
available for early adopters, Microsoft won’t have a
production-ready, Itanium-capable OS avaialable until late this
year.

“…The first ready for prime time, Microsoft operating
system-according to a Microsoft representative-will be Windows XP
64-bit on Oct. 25-with its 32-bit XP brother.

Instead of Wintel, early Itanium adopters will be running Linux
on Intel, or Lintel, as some insiders call it. Linux platform firms
Red Hat, SuSE, and TurboLinux have announced the release of Linux
2.4 based Itanium Linuxes in mid-June.”
