“IBM’s strategy to combine the best features from Linux and Unix
took a major step forward recently after the company released a
toolbox for its AIX Unix operating system that allows developers to
recompile Linux applications to run on AIX.”
“The toolbox, which can be downloaded from the address below,
contains a range of open-source and GNU software and applications,
including recompiled versions of the Gnome and KDE desktop
environments; system utilities such as emacs, Samba and zip;
libraries and shells; and application development tools such as g++
and Autoconf.”
“Tilak Agerwala, vice president for AIX at IBM, said the company
is enabling Linux across all its server product lines. “We are
using the toolbox to unleash the capabilities to run Linux
applications on AIX,” he said. “The toolbox is an important
milestone in this, as it allows developers to use the already
familiar Linux development tools and environment to recompile
applications and, once they’ve gone through this, the applications
basically run like a native AIX application. This gives our
customers the benefits of AIX while using a familiar Linux
environment.”
