ZDNET UK: New project aims to break the limits of Linux clustering

“Linux could vault into the datacentre with 1024-node high
availability clusters within two years if an ambitious clustering
architecture, now being drafted, gains industry and community
support.”

First design specifications from the new project — Linux
Cluster Cabal — are aimed at breaking the ceiling of today’s
commercial Unix-based clusters.

“The project’s team — including Larry McVoy, president of
BitMover, and the former Sun Microsystems and SGI engineer who led
Sun’s first clustering initiative, Stephen Tweedie, who heads Linux
file system development, and Peter Braam of Stelia Computing and
leader of Carnegie Mellon University’s Coda distributed file system
— first met in secret in August to devise a clustering
architecture that satisfies both commercial data processing and HPC
(high performance computing) requirements.”
