“Oracle last week took the wraps off an application server
optimised for online, database-driven applications, allowing
businesses and developers to take advantage of the platform beneath
Oracle’s Release 11i line of vertical applications.”

“Oracle officials said the Internet Application Server (IAS) and
its accompanying developer kit provides a general platform for
middleware, enabling companies to consolidate a large number of
servers onto one platform. It includes Java 2 Enterprise
Edition (J2EE) support, the Apache Web server, software for
cacheing and business intelligence analysis, and support for
forms-based applications and business portals. The product runs on
several versions of Unix, including Linux
, and will be
available on Windows in a few weeks, officials said.”

“The software underlying the product was shipped earlier with
Oracle Release 11i, Oracle’s range of vertical applications for
disciplines such as human resources and procurement. Robert Shimp,
Oracle’s senior director of product marketing, said the features
underlying those applications have been split out to enable
customers to take advantage of them for third-party and custom
middleware and also so Oracle can challenge IBM and BEA.”
