32BitsOnline: Book Review: Apache: The Definitive Guide

“Apache means something different to everyone. Systems
administrators rave about the rock solid performance. Web designers
love the endless configuration options. And programmers like
cutting their teeth on the world’s most widely used web server.
Whatever your persuasion, O’Reilly’s Apache: The Definitive Guide,
2nd Edition will help you do your job better.”

“Ben and Peter Laurie’s second edition contains a slew of
improvements and additions over the first. The first thing you’ll
notice is the inclusion of a quick reference card listing
directives, error codes, and command line options. As you flip
through the book you might see text marked as “Win32” or “Unix” –
where differences appear the text includes instructions for both
versions. Both the Win32 and Unix distributions of Apache 1.3.3 are
included on a CD along with the sample web sites created in the
book.”

“Speaking of Apache 1.3, the authors felt there were enough
changes after the release of 1.3 to justify this second edition.
The book weighs in at 369 pages, over 100 of those having been
added since the first edition. Some of the examples have been
expanded and every chapter is longer than the first edition. But
don’t expect too much hand holding, the book covers a lot of
subjects in a relatively small amount of space.
