“David began by describing the three upcoming major
announcements from Linuxcare in detail. On Monday, June 12th,
Linuxcare will be announcing the following:”
“Linuxcare will be releasing a new web-based, automated support
offering from the Services Division called DeltaBase. This service
is geared toward Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Original
Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that design products for the Linux
operating system. … DeltaBase is a system for tracking
differences, or deltas, between distributions.”
“…Linuxcare has created a custom Linux solution for IBM based
on Caldera Linux 2.4 to support two new Thinkpad laptops. IBM has
committed to Linux on all their hardware from main servers down to
laptops. They found that there were major issues to be resolved
before Linux would be fully supported on laptop units. IBM
approached Linuxcare to help them prepare a custom build of Caldera
2.4 on two Thinkpad laptops so that IBM could supply fully loaded
systems with Linux pre-installed that supported all Thinkpad
hardware. … IBM made sure that the new Thinkpads have hardware
modems included that are fully supported under Linux. Linuxcare
resolved all of the hardware issues and also tweaked the video
drivers, token-ring network drivers, and kernel for optimum
performance on the new units.”
“…Linuxcare has completed, at IBM’s request, a port of
Linux to the Power4 processor, the next generation heart of AS/400
and RS/6000 systems. This news was not supposed to be
announced until the official release of the Power4 processor. IBM
representatives however posted news of the port to the kernel-notes
mailing list.”
