“I’m always using the bash shell to build new little tools for
myself. I like wrapping command line programs in small scripts. It
allows me to define my own command line options and simplify the
command’s interface. I also build my own little C programs for
simple and frequently performed tasks. When I schedule a program
using the cron utility, I invariably wrap it in a shell script.

Tool building in UNIX is not very difficult. The UNIX
command line is extraordinarily powerful, but it is also very
simple. One can start small and take on larger worlds later.

Trial and error after error is a good teacher. It also helps to
have some good introductory books.”
