“NetBSD can be intimidating from a Linux user’s perspective.
However, as the Linux user base grows, more people are finding
their needs aren’t being met by traditional Linux distributions.
NetBSD is ready to step up to fill this niche.
While Linux and
NetBSD share many characteristics, there are some key
differences.”

“For the purpose of this article, I installed NetBSD 1.4.2 with
a CD-ROM purchased from Cheapbytes. The system was a stock Pentium
II-300 which had outlived its usefulness as a Windows machine.”

“Once I installed bash and other amenities I was familiar with
from Linux, I attempted to install X. It worked fine with my
Voodoo3, but was a bit plain. In terms of ease of setup, NetBSD is
about four or five years behind commercial Linux distributions.
You’ll have to know your monitor and video card characteristics
before you start, because auto-detection ala Mandrake, Corel, or
Red Hat is not done.”
