“Linux’s honeymoon is over. Last year, you could have stuck the
word “Linux” onto a box of cat litter and investors would have torn
their left eyes out to get a piece of it. Now Linux is yesterdays
news. The hype has died down. For those who rode the wave of Linux
hype, what now? Whether it be investor withdrawal, or the money
simply running out, a lot of smaller Linux companies seem to be
headed for disaster. The question is, does this really surprise
anyone?”
“The company that inspired this column is Stormix, based in
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Now, this story is
UNSUBSTANTIATED… Various rumours persist, but they all seem to
follow a similar theme. Stormix is or has filed for
bankruptcy. … According to one user who sent in all the
information for his mail-in rebate, he received a letter saying he
won’t be receiving it.”
“In business, there is finite room for competition. While Linux
doesn’t have one dominant distribution, it does have a “king of the
hill”, that being Redhat. The simple reason being that Redhat is
the most widely used and easiest to setup. At least, that is what
the marketing would have you believe. The problem for Stormix and
their Storm Linux distribution is finding their niche. They
didn’t/haven’t.”
