CanadaComputes.com: Welcome revision to a Linux classic

One of the great books on Linux has been Matt Welsh’s
Running Linux. Welsh was the founder of the Linux Documentation
Project in 1993 and a pioneer Linux documentation writer, authoring
several early Linux HOWTO documents….

“For a long time, it was the book you could recommend to anyone
starting to use the Linux operating system. Running Linux presents
a comprehensive overview the OS, from its history and philosophy to
nuts-and-bolts issues. However, the book lay fallow for too long
and the rapid pace of Linux development torpedoed it into
obsolescence. While everything it said was still valid on one
level, it was terribly out of date with the tools people were
actually using.”

“Thankfully, O’Reilly & Associates has published a revised
edition, which is again a recommended purchase for new users. It
won’t answer every question, but it will give users the best
overview of any book on Linux for beginners without talking down to
them.”
