Chicago Tribune: Web computers slated for Chicago schools [NIC Linux-based ‘net appliances]

The New Internet Computer Co. is making good on its word
this week by starting to install 1,150 of its relatively new
Internet appliances in Chicago-area public schools.

“The San Fransisco-based company has given 500 of its NICs – a
redevelopment of the network computer Oracle Corp. marketed with
limited success in the mid-1990s – with a more-than-matching gift
from the National Association of College and University Business
Officers.”

“The NICs offer Internet browsing and e-mail access. They sell
for $199 (a monitor is an additional $129) and are powered by the
Linux operating system, a free competitor to Windows. They include
an ethernet connection that makes them broadband- and cable-ready
and Internet access through NetZero, a free Internet service
provider. Users can, however, connect to other ISPs.”
