CNET News.com: Linux-Mandrake 7.2 [Review]

“We liked the previous release of MandrakeSoft’s
Linux-Mandrake–version 7.1 –because it offered ease of use
without sacrificing high-end features. The latest iteration,
Linux-Mandrake 7.2, is even better. Users of all stripes–from
beginners to advanced Linux jockeys–will like this release. In
addition to the excellent installation and configuration tools that
appeared in Linux-Mandrake 7.1, this new version now offers a
vastly improved desktop interface, an improved printing tool, and
helpful Internet connectivity features.

“Linux-Mandrake 7.2 ships with the much-anticipated KDE 2.0
desktop interface. KDE 2.0’s applications include Konqueror (a Web
browser), an outstanding file manager, a document viewer, and the
KOffice suite of office software. Actually, your copy of
Linux-Mandrake 7.2 may not really include KDE 2.0–although the
included version 1.99 is about as close as you can get. If you need
to, you can get the full 2.0 release in a variety of ways. If you
purchased the packaged product, you can get the KDE 2.0 update CD
free when you register your copy at Mandrake’s Web site .
Alternatively, with just a few clicks of your mouse, you can use
the Mandrake Update feature to get the upgrade, or you can download
the latest version of the Linux-Mandrake 7.2 installation CD and
use DrakConf to update KDE.”

“Mandrake also has a remedy for typically font-deprived Linux
distributions. Its DrakFont tool (introduced in version 7.1) lets
you choose fonts from Windows’ abundant selection of TrueType fonts
and install them on your Linux desktop. DrakFont is especially
valuable for Web browsing as many of the fonts used on Web sites
are compatible with only Windows or Mac systems.”
