CNET News.com: Transmeta chip to get inside Hitachi notebooks

Tokyo-based Hitachi said it will launch notebooks running
on the Crusoe chip in November.

“The move follows Sony’s announcement last month that the
company will start using Crusoe for its Vaio laptop computers.
Quanta, the world’s No. 2 maker of notebook computers, said this
week the Taiwanese company will ship Crusoe-powered notebooks to
IBM by the end of this year.”

“Hitachi’s move could help weaken the dominance of Intel, the
world’s biggest maker of microprocessors. Intel and Advanced Micro
Devices together sell more than 95 percent of all processor chips.
Five-year-old Transmeta’s entry into the processor market is good
news for personal computer makers and owners, as competition will
force chipmakers to make higher quality and cheaper products.”
