“The European Commission today disclosed that it plans to
move quickly to register its proposed .eu address extension for Web
sites as a top-level Internet domain name.”
“For the European Commission, the creation of an .eu domain is
an important step toward strengthening the image and the
infrastructure of the Internet in Europe. However, the proposal
also is motivated by evidence that the generic .com top-level
domain name is becoming congested, according to the commission
officials.”
“In addition, the commission said the .eu extension would let
companies avoid the necessity of registering their Web sites under
different names in individual countries that belong to the European
Union. Currently, each EU country has its own domain — .fr for
France, for example.”
