Is Linux on the desktop worth a second look if Chrome gives an old PC a new lease of life?

Even the Linux faithful seem to have give up on declaring each new year “The Year of Linux on the Desktop”. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with Linux, it’s just that it never managed to catch the eye of your average punter looking for a computer which “just works”. The initial leap to Linux can present a steep learning curve for tech novices, although consumer-friendly distros such as Ubuntu are working hard to make it a smooth transition. Even so, it’s a leap your average person doesn’t seem prepared to make or even see the need for.
