“Despite the incredible success of Linux, which now has an
estimated 25 million users, the major impediment to its continued
proliferation is currently at the desktop level, says Jon “Maddog”
Hall, executive director of Linux International and a leader of the
Linux community.”
“According to Hall, who was the opening speaker at a Linux
seminar Monday held at the Jacob Javits Center, any operating
system needs to have “tens of thousands of applications for the
desktop market.” And while desktop applications are starting to
be ported to the Linux operating system, there are two key ones
that are conspicuous by their absence: Microsoft Office and
Quicken.”
