CRN: Rebel With a Cause — CA Throws Support To Linux

“Computer Associates International Inc. is making an aggressive
play for the Linux market with a move expected to save customers
thousands of dollars.”

“The Islandia, N.Y.-based vendor is introducing three Linux
products, including a version of its flagship Unicenter TNG
product, with a blockbuster 90-day introductory offer that forgoes
licensing fees.”

“VARs here at CA-World ’99 said the open-code operating system
is taking hold, the opportunity is ripe and CA’s move is going to
speed up the momentum for Linux in the enterprise.”

“‘Linux is definitely taking off,’ said Niten Ved, president of
NetCom Systems Inc., Metuchen, N.J. ‘We know of one client, a
mid-Atlantic utility company, that has a few thousand Linux boxes
and would like to manage them. This CA announcement is critical to
getting them the help they need without writing custom
agents.'”

“The VAR has about 25 clients running Linux, and its profit
margin on Linux products and services is 15 percent higher than on
Windows NT, he said.”
