eWeek: For Java, [MS] ruling’s a Window of opportunity

“U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson’s historic
breakup order opens a window of opportunity for all of Microsoft
Corp.’s software competitors, but none more so than for Sun
Microsystems Inc. and the growing legions of Java
developers.”

“How well the Java fraternity exploits that opening depends on
several factors, including Sun’s ongoing efforts to make Java more
reliable and scalable. But clearly, the timing has never been
better for Sun and its partners, who believe the momentum for
Internet application development has swung fully into the Java
camp.”

“I think the feud between [Sun CEO] Scott [McNealy] and
Microsoft is now one of those funny, historical things,” said Robin
Cutshaw, president of consulting and development company Internet
Labs Inc., of Atlanta. “He doesn’t really need to preach the gospel
anymore. You can do so much more with Java.”
