InfoWorld: Oracle taps Solaris for server appliances

“Oracle and Sun Microsystems unwrapped a technology exchange
agreement on Monday that will allow Oracle to use the kernel of
Sun’s Solaris operating system for its “server appliance”
initiative, Raw Iron.”

appliance,” Ellison said, adding that “installing the appliance
will be as simple as plugging it into the wall and into the network
… all the complexity [of the operating system] has been hidden
from you.”

“In return for the use of its Solaris kernel, Sun gets to
combine components of Oracle8i with Solaris to add functionality to
the Sun operating system.”
