Internet Week: Heavyweights Back Linux OS

“At the first major industry trade show for the open source
operating system held here last week, scores of enterprise systems
and applications vendors promised significant support for Linux.
Included in the ranks were Computer Associates Inc., Compaq, Corel
Corp., Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Netscape, Oracle and Sun
Microsystems.

The inventor of Linux, Linus Torvalds, said domination is the
goal for Linux.

‘Within a few years, we will be the biggest operating system on
the planet,’ he said in a keynote address.

That is an ambitious goal given that many corporate users said
they tend to use Linux for more point solutions. MIS manager Tony
Pinto of Minolta Canada Inc. said he uses Linux as an e-mail and
EDI gateway, and as a Web proxy server.”
