IT-Director: Progress spins off NuSphere to provide Open Source database

“Progress Software has just created a new company, NuSphere,
with the aim of promoting the use of the Open Source database. It
is going to fund the activities of NuSphere to the tune of
$2½ million to enable it to develop its product, NuSphere
MySQL. It has reached agreement with the developers of MySQL to
provide a Gnu Public License (GPL) for the product so that it can
develop a strong position within the Open Source marketplace. …
The addition of a database capability is seen as the next logical
step in the creation of an Open Source infrastructure.”

“NuSphere will be developing the basic MySQL code to create
a full function, commercially viable relational database.
It
will also provide commercial support, consulting, and training for
customers deploying MySQL as part of their Web infrastructure.”

“By giving its VARs the ability to implement Progress solutions
on an Open Source platform it allows them to keep costs –
hence prices – to a minimum. NuSphere takes this a step
further by creating an organisation that is focussed entirely on
the Open Source market and can use the experience and funding from
Progress to come up with a strong applications platform for
businesses.”
