“Linus Torvalds, 33, creator of the Linux operating system and
self-proclaimed ‘poster boy’ of the open source movement, received
a warm welcome from a Korean audience yesterday during his first
visit here. About 500 people filled the grand ballroom of Shilla
Hotel, Seoul, some of them programmers and obvious Torvalds fans,
to see their hero in person.“‘Software has become a commodity, not a specialized item based
on just a small number of companies making profits,’ Mr. Torvalds
said in a speech on the future of Linux, whose source code is open
to the public.“‘I have enjoyed messing with Linux from version 1,’ one person
in the audience said during the question and answer session, ‘and I
have admired your sense and spirit since then…'”
