Linus Torvalds to receive Finnish honorary doctorate

By Martin Vermeer

Coming spring, the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of
Helsinki (Linus’s alma mater) will award an honorary doctorate to
Linus Torvalds. Dr. Torvalds already was awarded a similar honour
by the University of Stockholm.

In the grounds stated by the promotion committee,
programming work is likened to the original forms of academic
research.
Like scientists of days gone by, Internetworked
computer hobbyists work independently, but depending upon each
other for peer review, without motives of economic gain. [my
