LinuxBeginner: A Week with SuSE 9

“As per my normal methods, since I’m on a fairly quick cable
connection, I prefer to install over the internet whenever
possible. Since SuSE doesn’t offer ISO images for download, this
the only option. SuSE offers a small boot.iso image for the
installer, but I opt to use their floppy images in/> stead.
According to the README.FTP file, I will need at least the boot and
modules 1 and 3 images, so I write those to disk and boot the
machine.

“I’m met with a very attractive boot/install
routine–considerably more so than I’ve come to expect from floppy
based installations. Style points to SuSE right from the beginning.
I choose the ‘Installation’ option from the provided menu, and am
prompted for the modules 1 floppy, it churns a bit and I’m met with
a familiar framebuffer text startup sequence.

“The GUI routine starts up and I’m prompted for language and
keyboard settings. Then there’s a ‘Main Menu’ consisting of
‘Settings,’ ‘System information,’ ‘Kernel modules,’ ‘Start
installation,’ ‘Exit,’ and ‘Power off.’ I choose ‘Kernel modules’
and am shown a list of module types to choose from. I choose ‘Load
network card modules’ so I can get my network card working for the
FTP install. The installer prompts me for the modules 3 floppy and
loads the modules into memory with a progress indicator. This is
very nice so far–lots of communication showing what’s
happening…”
