Linuxberg Goes Around The World In 18 Days

February 1, 1999 – Toronto – The TUCOWS Network today announced
that, Linuxberg, the network’s newest site has reached 100
affiliates in the Linuxberg mirror network. The addition of its
newest affiliate, USOL, a national ISP operating from Michigan,
United States on January 30th officially put the company over the
top. Achieving global distribution in less than three weeks makes
Linuxberg one of the most popular and widespread software
repositories for the Linux platform.

“As a Linux user, I was thrilled when I heard about Linuxberg,”
says Fred Rappuhn, president of USOL.com. “As a national ISP, we
get many calls to our helpdesk from customers running Linux. It is
helpful for us to have one site locally to send our customers to.
By having such a great collection of software, Linuxberg really
helps us out in this regard.”

The TUCOWS Network employs a unique “mirroring” strategy that
duplicates the site’s content on web servers all over the world.
Unlike traditional software archives, Linuxberg and the other sites
in The TUCOWS Network provide more than a list of links to various
FTP sites. Rather, the firm actually creates and maintains its own
file libraries for use by visitors to their popular web sites. By
mirroring Linuxberg at these 100 sites, Linux users can download
their favorite software titles from locations that are closer to
them, thus avoiding frustrating network congestion and other
delays.

“We are particularly proud of this accomplishment,” says Scott
Swedorski, president of TUCOWS. “Never before have we launched a
site and met with such approval, success and traffic in such a
short time. We look forward to growing this project even more and
working with the development community to ensure an available and
stable distribution channel for their applications.”

Linuxberg, the newest addition to The TUCOWS Network allows
Linux users the world over to browse through and download their
favorite Linux applications without fighting Internet delays,
broken links or overburdened FTP servers. Launched on January 12,
1999, Linuxberg has quickly grown to become one of the most
ubiquitous Linux resources available via the Internet.
