“What really hasn’t changed much is the competition, and the
push for brand recognition. Ever since the first IBM clone, the
debate over whether to buy brand name or a cheaper knock off has
been burning. Words like quality, value, and reliability are tossed
around and often used as weapons in the ensuing arguments for and
against particular vendors.“Then you add us Linux users to the mix and the argument takes
on a whole new direction. While we’re just as interested in
reliability and features, we’re really much more interested in
performance and compatibility with our beloved OS. And I haven’t
met a Linux user yet who isn’t a penny pincher. (Not that that is a
bad thing.) So what we decided to do here was to pit two mobile
units against each other in a Tux based grudge match: one brand
name, one not so well known. We tested the units, played with them,
carried them into meetings, dragged them through the airport, pried
open a few covers, and all sorts of things that a Linux lover on
the go might do with one of these handy items. Due to time
constraints, we were unable to test everything we wanted to, but we
did get through quite a bit…”
