This review of the AMD Duron 850 compares it to an Athlon 850
and finds that in some instances, the Duron delivers similar
performance to its more pricey sibling. The usual benchmarking
suspects: kernel compiles, Quake 3, and POV Ray are brought out for
this in-depth.
“We found the Duron completely capable under Linux.
While the smaller L2 cache certainly hurt it in some areas, the
difference wasn’t that large. The cost difference is pretty big
though, and with the Duron being so overclockable, it certainly
proves to be a great value for those who don’t need the fastest box
on the street. As a Linux user, you really can’t go wrong either way. Both
chips are supported evenly. However, if you are a developer or like
to compile many things from source, the Duron may not be the best
choice. Whatever you choose, we hope this article has helped make
the decision easier.”
