“When a LinuxFest organizer approached Eric S. Raymond to
collaborate on hosting a Geeks with Guns session to kick off this
year’s festivities later this week, he said he wasn’t counting on
tapping into community outrage over one of its icons’ affair with
potentially lethal weapons.”

“Since word has gotten out about the gatherings, respondents on
sites such as Slashdot and Linux Today have occasionally posted
their own virtual firestorms on the subject of geeks and guns. Some
readers have even suggested that news regarding the event should be
censored. “A lot of non-Americans (and probably even Americans too)
get very offended by being associated with the `guns movement’
[activity] of people like Eric S. Raymond,” posted Mads Bondo
Dydensborg on Linux Today. “I know I am asking for trouble here,
but really, Eric and others’ attitude towards guns is considered
almost sick where I come from, and IMHO should be suppressed by
media like Linux Today. I am sure you could have mentioned
LinuxFest without mentioning the guns.”

“Greg Palmer, who issued the event’s announcement is president
of event sponsor Mobius Marketing. He said on Friday that he had
spent the morning answering a number of “nasty e-mails” lambasting
the event and criticizing Raymond for being a gun enthusiast.”
