“John’s plan is a virtual machine that is compiled using a
modified code generation engine for LCC. Kinda like a Java VM, but
using ANSI C. This has many benefits, one of which is portability.
There are both server and client side shared libraries now, which
means mod makers now have full control over client side effects
(explosions, particle fields, etc).”

“Linux is moving much more towards X11 for games than the old
SVGALib method. This is especially true with 3D games that are
OpenGL based. So a good working knowledge of X11 is required.”
