“…Q: How do you see the current status of
open source certification in Australia and Worldwide?”
“A: Worldwide the certification is gaining
momentum, the LPI (Linux Professional Institute) which is an
International organisation with its head office in Canada has been
doing great things, one notable thing that separates the LPI
from anyone else is that it is a non profit organisation and vendor
neutral, and that the community can have a voice in its direction
& content. In Australia its only now starting to gain
momentum, sure it’s been available, but is not at the same stage as
elsewhere. This is why I have decided to bring the Linux
Professional Institute to the attention of the public in Australia.
I have also known some of the key people behind the LPI for some
time, and would like to see their efforts embraced and carried on
here as well.”
“…Q: Projects like the LDP (Linux
Documentation Project) already offer a wealth of information
aniline with a thriving community of editors. How do you see
training certification courses building upon this and offering
participants more than just a ‘feather in the cap’ on the CV?”
“A: That’s true, there are so many good
resources online, however it seems to me at times that people do
not know exactly how to harness all this information and use it to
their advantage, in this light I think training and certification
are an excellent way to gain recognition of achieving a certain
level of competence. The former is really wholly to the advantage
of the person taking training, certification is to the advantage of
both the end user and to prospective employers, unless you have
written some content in the LDP, I doubt the LDP would be of any
interest to most employers.”
