Linux and open source software have typically been regarded
as alternative and counter-culture. This was made more obvious with

“The IMC have intentionally chosen Linux and open source
technology, such as PHP and the PostgreSQL database to power the
site because of the way in which it replicates their own push for
an alternative social approach to the mainstream. Linux and open
source have also allowed them to use inexpensive, second hand
hardware to get the centre up and running. Linux’s networking
capabilities means that the site can run off of equalised dial-up
modem connections to the Internet.”
