“By now, most Linux users have at least heard of Linux
certification, of the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), and of
SAIR. Many now have questions about becoming certified
themselves: “Do the exams test relevant skills? How hard are they?
What should I study?” Fresh from his first LPI exam, Joe Barr is
here with the answers.“
“I recently took the first half of the Linux Professional
Institute’s Level 1 certification exam for junior Linux system
administrators. It was a relatively painless experience, and the
exam is a good test of basic admin knowledge. Actually, it was kind
of fun — if you’ve been out of school for as long as I have, at
least, anyway.”
“Linux certification is coming of age. Eileen Cohen wrote an
analysis on the subject earlier this year, and I talked quite a bit
about LPI in a recent Version Control column. (Both references can
be found in the Resources section at the end of this article.) I’m
writing this report to keep the promise I made in Version Control
to provide a closer look at actually taking the exam. If you are,
or want to be, a Linux system administrator, and you want to have
as many options as possible in your career path, then getting
certified is something you should have on your to-do list.”
