Report from N.Y. LinuxWorld Expo
----------------------------------------
It was a cold and rainy day in New York as LinuxWorld Expo 2002 came to
a close last Friday. At the MandrakeSoft booth, over 2,000 free CDs of
Mandrake Linux 8.1 were distributed during the three day period --
almost 1000 disks were given away within the first hour of the opening
day alone!

Many well-attended presentations were conducted each day by
MandrakeSoft employees Jeff Garzik, Todd Lyons, Stew Benedict and
security expert Jay Beales on topics such as security, the Single
Network Firewall and Mandrake Linux 8.1. MandrakeSoft North American
Vice-President Daniel Morales reported on some very productive meetings
with several major hardware vendors, and says that we should see some
important announcements in the coming months; he also reported making
some very good contacts within Mexico & Latin America and noted that
several large organizations have announced limited transitions from
Windows to Linux this year.

The featured products of this year's show included the Single Network
Firewall, 8.1 ProSuite Gold, and a new training kit for educational
centers that train students for the Linux Professional Institute (LPI)
certification test.

The overwhelming feeling from this year's show seems to be that
mainstream companies are not only aware of the benefits and cost
savings of Linux, but now consider Linux to be a "real" option and are
planning tests and transitional scenarios during the current year.

session with MandrakeSoft's Gaël Duval -- has been completed and the
final interview is now posted. MandrakeClub members who wish to

Spotlight on Ximian GNOME
----------------------------------------
Ximian GNOME has been released for Mandrake 8.1.
"Ximian" is a commercial software & services company that produces a
customized version of the popular GNOME desktop -- "The Ximian
Desktop". Users who are interested in updating their Mandrake systems
with Ximian GNOME should be aware that the download can be quite large
(up to 400MB), and that it replaces the standard GNOME desktop
(including the Mandrake menus).

For more information about Ximian GNOME and download locations, see:

Mandrake Advocates in the Spotlight
----------------------------------------
Mandrake Linux is a community-based effort that involves the work of
many translators, beta testers, package contributors, etc. But many
other Mandrake supporters contribute in their own personal and
"unofficial" way; MandrakeSoft would like to thank the following people
and websites for their continued support throughout the years:

"Texstar" of PCLinuxOnline.com is a long-time contributing member of
Mandrake Development -- you'll find many of his packages in the
Mandrake Cooker and in the Contribs section. As a side project, Texstar
creates optimized RPMS for Linux Mandrake 8.1 and makes them available
from his personal FTP site at eastwind.net
ftp://ftp.eastwind.net/pub/mirrors/texstar/

"TheDarb" is the webmaster of GUI-Lords.org -- this popular website is
dedicated to "Linux domination of the Desktop" and has been a long-time
advocate of Mandrake Linux. The website offers a discussion & news
board.

In addition to being a regular participant of MandrakeForum & MandrakeUser, long-time advocate "Ranger" offers many unofficial
Mandrake packages on his personal FTP site:
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/mandrake8.1/

Our sincere thanks go out to everyone who helps make Linux (and
Mandrake) such a wonderful operating system.

Software Updates
----------------------------------------
Security-related software updates have been released for:
gzip -- fixed buffer overflow
rsync -- fixes unsigned insecurities
enscript -- fixes temporary file vulnerability
