iOpen Technologies Ltd is a Christchurch New Zealand based
company which specialises in products based on GNU/Linux.
iOpen is owned and run by four people with considerable
experience with the GNU/Linux operating system and its applications
and software tools, as well as having diverse and complementary
experience in business and computing in general. Planning and
development started in early 1998 and business commenced in
December 1998.
Linux-based systems are excellent solutions to a wide range of
commercial and industrial data handling problems, because of
Linux’s legendary benefits – openness, stability, reliability,
speed, scalability, configurability, and maintainability.
iOpen’s products range from Internet gateways and thin clients
to Workgroup servers (which can interoperate with existing Windows,
Mac and Netware networks) and higher-end database servers (based on
an agreement with Informix). The hardware used is of a very high
standard and comes mostly from well-established local suppliers.
Embedded Linux-based products are in the pipeline.
In addition, iOpen Technologies offers design, implementation
and deployment services for specialised techniques and technologies
such as barcoding, database management, data logging, Electronic
Data Interchange (EDI), hand-held data terminals, computing and
networking in hostile environments, object-orientation, process
monitoring and control, product labelling, and radio
networking.
iOpen Technologies is committed to research and development, and
our evolving platform-independent administration software will be
released in the near future under an Open Source licence – for the
benefit of and further development by the Open Source
community.
Other services include total security auditing (physical as well
as network level), Web site and mail/mail-list hosting (on iOpen’s
own server if desired), Web design, and working with internet
service provider Cave Rock ( http://caverock.net.nz ) to
arrange Internet access for customers. iOpen can design and
implement LANs, WANs and Virtual Private Networks, with a strong
emphasis on the security of data. Support (casual or contract) and
training are available. Support and maintenance can be carried out
on-site, or by means of Linux’s “remote administration done
properly” abilities via a direct modem connection or a
strongly-encrypted Internet session.
