Notes From The Show: Day .5, An Exercise in Transitions

By Brian Proffitt
Managing Editor

I thought it would be a good idea to wear black to the Red Hat
press/analyst function Monday night, to fit in with the rest of the
people here in San Francisco. Looks-wise, it worked, but
confortwise, I was doomed when I walked into the Moscone Room at
the Argent Hotel, because except for a small confort zone right
near the windows, it was hot as an oven in there.

I went to the event to hear Red Hat’s recent announcement
regarding their open source application server. Leigh Day, of Red
Hat’s PR, thought that the entry into this space was a good move
for Red Hat, and they were encouraged by BEA’s support for the new
app server. I made a mental note to go find JBoss head honcho Marc
Fleury today and see what he thinks.

Also on my agenda today is judging for the Open Source
Excellence Awards, which I hope will be interesting. I have two
categories thatr are a bit, um, dry, but one really interesting
one. I just hope more judges show up this year, as last time in NY,
it was myself and two other judges who judged everything.

I know Doc Searls will be there, as I spoke with him at the Red
Hat shindig last night. Doc is one of the Linux writers I really
admire, so working with him is most cool. He’s excited about the
new Doc Searls’ IT Garage site (http://garage.docsearls.com/),
which will feature nuts-and-bolts IT articles that should get into
the real work going on in IT shops.

After the judging, I will be meeting with HP and Scott Handy
from IBM. I also have meetings lined up with AMD, Netline, and
Penguin Computing, followed by an OSDL Reception this evening. At 2
local time, I put in an appearance on The Linux Show, in case you
have an urge to hear my girly-sounding voice.

More later, off to hit the showers.
