“The president of VistaSource Inc. — formerly the Linux
Division of Applix — talks about Applixware, the open source
auction site Cosource.com, and the future of thin client
computing.”
“OSIT: In 1999 Applix made $18 million in
revenue, and $1.5 million of that was Linux. That’s a relatively
small percentage.
Thompson: Right. The balance of it is Unix,
Solaris, HP-UX. That’s where we come from as a company, the Unix
market.”
“OSIT: Let’s talk about end users. Applixware,
your desktop suite, offers a word processor, spreadsheet and
presentation program. I’ve heard Applixware users say things like
“You can’t tell it’s not MS Office.”
Thompson: We’ve done a lot of work in our 5.0
product to bring it closer to Microsoft. Most of the users at this
point are familiar with Microsoft Office. So we want to make that
transition as easy as possible, and with each successive version
we’re doing more and more to make that easier. But we’re also
focused on avoiding bloatware, we shoot to have 70% of the
features, but to have 90% or more of the features that anyone would
need.”
