“Linux needs application developers. With Cygnus they plan to
give a team already providing good tools more resources to do so.
So that’s a start, but what next? Red Hat can’t hire all the
world’s application developers. It can’t train all of them either.
But it can help the world get training. So the next target is
simple:

Buy O’Reilly.”

As an added bonus, they get access to O’Reilly’s market
channels. And as a bonus to the Linux community, we’ll get a
publisher who is truly committed to free software.
My
impression several years ago when I worked and lived near
O’Reilly’s Cambridge office was that Tim O’Reilly’s support of
Linux was very lukewarm at first, and people inside there had to
work rather hard to get that commitment. He’s been better in recent
years, but the fact that there was a push towards, gasp, windows
books, was just wrong. (This is half tongue in cheek)”
