“Take a look at the competition for market share in the server
OS market, and you’ll see a great battle. The battle is often posed
as Microsoft vs. Linux, the big bad monopoly vs. the freewheeling
open source innovator. It’s a neat story, but that’s not the full
picture.

“As any network administrator will tell you, there’s another big
competitor for server OS market share, one that doesn’t make as
many headlines. It’s Unix, and its fortunes are as influenced by
Linux’ rise as much as Microsoft’s–probably more.

“Linux, of course, is an open source descendent of Unix. So it’s
ironic that Linux appears to be pushing Unix offstage–but it most
certainly is…”
