“Ever since the Microsoft ANTI-Trust suit, Linux has
steamrolled across the Internet as THE “Alternative Operating
System.” Some people “Oooh” and “Ahhh” over this, and sure it’s a
GREAT thing, however too much attention is not necessary a good
thing….“
“I read an article on Slashdot today (December 15th, 1999) about
Linus announcing the move into Pre-2.4 stage….This is my primary
reason for submitting this article. I did not see the announcement
on the mailing list as it refers to, but the 2.3 series of kernels
is FAR from being complete, not to mention stable (as it stands, it
is relatively so). By my estimation, doing the work I do, the work
I have done, the sources for the 2.3 kernels I have seen, and the
previous developmental kernels I have seen <-> the amount of
time it has taken for them to go stable (again by browsing through
the source code to the kernel), it would appear that 2.4 should not
be released within the next few months.”
“For one, Alan Cox promised all this new stuff within the 2.4
release and most of it has not even remotely begun work, and I’m
sorry but there is no way in hell Alan himself can do all of what
he promises in the next 2 years. The TCP/IP stack in 2.4 is getting
better, but has still brought down my machines when using it in
conjunction with IP Masquerading and the new NAT tool (netfilter).
The USB support is still very unusable, the support for the Athlon
has something left to be desired, and too many more things that
just cannot be fixed by even the end of the first quarter of 2000
which it’s estimated to be released. In that article on /., it
states that this is in hopes of moving this way, Linus will be
“calming things down”. Well, I’m sorry but Linus is on crack if he
thinks that.”
