PC Week: Citrix expands into Unix territory

Citrix Systems Inc. this week upped the ante in the
terminal hosting game by introducing MetaFrame for
Solaris….

“Citrix rival The Santa Cruz Operation Inc. also is targeting
the burgeoning ASP market with its terminal software called
Tarantella. SCO, of Santa Cruz, Calif., had a leg up on Citrix
because it could host both Windows and Unix applications, but now
Citrix has matched them with MetaFrame for Solaris.”

“Despite the competition heating up between the companies, they
actually use significantly different architectures. Citrix uses a
two-tier architecture whereby the MetaFrame services run with the
application servers. SCO uses a three-tier system that puts a
Tarantella server between the end user and the application.”
