the Internet itself, Linux is a culmination of the efforts of many
people and companies, not just a single company’s efforts to define
an entire environment. Because Linux isn’t strongly linked to any
single Unix vendor’s hardware business model (as Solaris, AIX, and
HP-UX are), Linux has the potential to deliver on the oft-cited
promises of Unix in general.”
