PC Week: Sun withdraws Java from standards process

“Sun Microsystems Inc. shocked the Java world Tuesday when it
announced that it would quit efforts to formally standardize the
Java 2 platform, Standard Edition, through the ECMA standards
body.”

Sun officials at the Java Business Expo here cited the need
to protect the “integrity” of the company’s investment in
Java.

“Earlier in the day, George Paolini, Sun’s newly named vice
president of Java Community Development, acknowledged that the
relationship between Sun and ECMA (formerly known as the European
Computer Manufacturers Association) was at loggerheads, saying that
ECMA wanted to control the process and the copyright of Java
standards.”
