“Further proof that the corporate and open-source worlds are
colliding: IT software and news site Andover.net today acquired
Slashdot.org, the prominent open-source advocacy site.”
“Andover.net, billing itself as an “online IT network dedicated
to servicing the builders of the Internet,” is building a business
of offering IT news, freeware and software tools to users and
generating revenue from selling ads. The site is now paired with
Slashdot, the open-source community site that markets itself as
providing “News for nerds. Stuff that matters.”
“Slashdot has gained a reputation for corralling the wide
ranging views of open-source advocates into one site with news,
editorials and discussion forums, as well as access to source code
and other open-source materials. Founder Rob Malda (aka “CmdrTaco”)
said he was working 20-hour days and that the staff, many of whom
were volunteers, couldn’t keep up with the growth.”
