“… Beowulf software succeeded in linking large numbers of
Linux systems into supercomputer-class, parallel-processing
computing engines for technical and scientific purposes. Also in
the Linux community, TurboLinux and SGI demonstrated different
approaches to clustering at this summer’s LinuxWorld conference in
San Jose.”
“It is too early to determine how well Linux clustering will do
within data-center environments, but Linux edged its way into some
data centers by taking on limited roles, such as Web serving. In
these areas, both load-balancing clustering and high-availability
clusters are likely to improve the perception of Linux within the
data center, though currently available products have not reached
sufficient maturity for serious OPA contention.”
“Our usual tradition with the Editor’s Award is to single out
for recognition an individual who has made extraordinary
contributions to our segment of computing or a company that has
contributed on a similar, consistent scale. This year we did things
differently, and chose the legions of behind-the-scenes programmers
who contribute code to the phenomenon known as Linux.”
