“Over the past four years of my involvement with the Linux
community, I have heard repeatedly the same wish or dread
(depending on the time of day and the person): People wish or dread
that large computer companies will pay attention to Linux.
“As a representative of one of those large computer companies, I
understand both sides of the picture. On one side, the Linux
community wants to be successful, and to have its OS used by many
people. It wants help in obtaining new equipment, specifications
for that new equipment, and respect from the computer-science
community. On the other hand, it is concerned that when the suits
discover Linux, they will (intentionally or unintentionally) manage
to tear it apart.
“Well, that time has come.”
