“To see just what would be involved in replacing Windows with
Linux as a desktop operating system, I recently tried out two of
the latest releases of the open-source OS, Caldera Systems’
OpenLinux 2.2 and Red Hat Software’s Red Hat Linux 6.0. I also
checked out a word-processing application, Corel’s WordPerfect 8
for Linux. It was my first experience with Linux or any form of
Unix.”
“On the whole, it wasn’t encouraging: Trying to install the new
OS on a machine already set up for Windows 98 brought me up against
a long list of frustrations, and I still don’t have Red Hat
running.”
“The main problem with installing Linux alongside Windows is
that the two systems require different hard drive formats, so they
have to be installed on separate drives or partitions.”
