“A coalition of computer-industry heavyweights will put up
millions of dollars for a new lab intended to help Linux developers
bring the freely distributed operating system up to corporate

, according to
Michael Pope, director of enterprise software programs at
Intel.”

“Ross Mauri, vice president of Unix software at IBM, said the
group chose the Portland area because it’s still relatively
inexpensive, yet has a growing concentration of high-tech
companies, including facilities belonging to many of the sponsoring
companies. Additional labs, including facilities in Europe and
Asia, are likely to be announced next year
, he added.”
