“From the earliest days of computing, the potential for
empowerment of the disabled was widely recognized. As early as
Windows 3.1, the technology breathed new life into the
communicative ability and productivity of disabled people.
Accessibility features in modern computers ushered in a whole new
era of self-supporting positions previously out of the reach of
disabled persons. Say what you like about the big evil M-pire,
but they were first out of the gate on this one. So how does Linux
measure up in terms of accessibility?

“In a Linux environment, there are many tools that will
facilitate computing for a disabled person. While it may be
difficult to find exactly the tools you need to operate in Linux,
and an integrated accessibility package seems to be some time away,
there are still a number of tools that can make computing easier
and more productive. Thanks to the general Linux community, there a
number of newsgroups, mailing lists, HowTo’s and software that,
taken together can allow a visually or mobility challenged user the
freedom to become proficient at a very wide range of computing
tasks.”
