Signal Ground: USB Modems Under Linux, Part 2: Zoom’s 56K USB

“About a month ago, we at Signal Ground dove into the realm of
USB modems under Linux. In that first article, we covered the ACM
driver in detail and described some problems we encountered when
dialing a D-Link DSB-560 USB modem with KPPP. If you missed it, we
encourage you to stop and read it first, because it lays a
foundation that we’ll build upon in this review.”

“Between sketchy ACM support under various distributors’ kernels
and the troubles we had with KPPP (among other dialers), our
initial findings weren’t very hot in the “ease of use” department.
Ultimately, we were able to connect only by using pppd and chat
scripts. While this is no problem for an expert user, newbies will
undoubtedly find the task daunting at best….”

“It’s entirely reasonable to expect that use of USB devices
under Linux will become easier under these newest distros. In this
second part of our USB modem series, we’ll look at the preview
releases from Mandrake and SuSE, and we’ll also take the
opportunity to describe the Zoom 56K USB modem. Can it be added to
the list of Linux-supported USB modems? Read on to find out.”
