Siliconvalley.internet.com: Getting Linux Out of the Box

“Known mostly for its server and desktop abilities, Linux will
be popping up in more embedded devices shortly, thanks to two
Silicon Valley-based companies.

“Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker Transmeta and Sunnyvale,
Calif.-based MontaVista Software Tuesday struck a deal to develop
Transmeta’s family of Crusoe microprocessors for MontaVista Linux
software with the intent of putting them into portable audio,
multimedia and personal entertainment devices.

“Embedded Linux devices have been on the upswing as of late. A
recently published Evans Group survey found 45 percent of
developers surveyed expect to release a Linux application by the
end of the year and 14 percent said they have already done so. The
vast majority–about 80 percent–said that Linux was important to
the embedded system community…”
